I'm Shuangting Yao, a researcher and artist working at the intersection of computational media, critical technology studies, and East Asian cultural thought. My central question is whether technologies like AI and physical computing can be taught to carry inheritance rather than erase it — to let a culture keep speaking in its own accent — and how making itself can function as a mode of critical inquiry.
My research brings East Asian philosophical and material culture into contact with computational practice, treating language, craft lineages, and ecological forms as technical processes in their own right. Working through generative models, physical computing, and interactive installation, I approach technical media as cultural and ecological processes rather than neutral tools. I work primarily in Raspberry Pi, Arduino and p5.js, and write criticism in both Chinese and English.
I came to this work from technology education. I spent five years teaching design innovation, robotics, and AI-integrated creative technology at a high school in Shenzhen, where I built the first AI-generated art course offered in a Chinese public high school. Before that, I trained in instructional technology and communication, and co-authored two papers in a learning technologies research lab.
